Day & Night

By Day

By day, Stephanie and I followed the Kogi truck to its Yahoo destination in Santa Monica - her first time ever trying Kogi Bbq. In order for her to taste the all-around flavors of Kogi, I suggested we get a few things to share rather than order individually. As much as I wanted to get the Kimchi Quesadilla (my favorite), I eyed the Black Jack Quesadilla special and opted for that instead. Something new for the two of us! She had to try the signature short rib tacos, so I ordered 2 of those alongside Kogi Sliders - one order comes with 2 sliders. We enjoyed our food on a grassy patch thanks to Yahoo's office premises. It made for a perfect make-shift picnic spot! Great day in Cali to enjoy some hot truck heaven.

By Night

By night, Stephanie and I were off to Fresh Faces in Fashion presented by Plastics Make it Possible - Gen Art's anchor fashion event that showcases 5 budding designers on the runway and 4 accessories designers in standing installations. The show was hosted by Kaley Cuoco [CBS's Big Bang Theory] and took place in the Peterson Automotive Museum.

After snapping some throw back rides in the museum, we grabbed a drink (Red Leaf water for me thankyouverymuch), managed to quickly browse through our goodie bags and then lights out - the show quickly began! There's a link at the bottom of this post if you want to get more info on the show itself. If you want see pics, look directly below for tidbits of the night!

Baking School

Last Sunday, we learned all about dessert sauces in baking school. Teresa, our teacher, told us that a dessert sauce has the ability to make or break a favorite after-dinner treat. Sounds pretty serious, huh? Hehe. I can think of worse things...

Whether you like to drown a dessert in chocolate sauce, or use a little caramel for plate deco, or drizzle a little vanilla on something, or heck, you might even like sauce by itself - I've concluded that it's just a simple pleasure that adds an extra dimension to your dish. Funny enough, we whipped up quite a few dessert sauces in class but we couldn't really use them for what was baked off. This just means I have a little more home-baking to do... And we all know that never hurt nobody ;)

MY GJELI-AMOUR

In Status Magazine's latest issue [cover boy the late DJ AM], my take on Gjelina was summed up in the left-hand corner of the glossy glossy. With Singapore and Tokyo also making appearances on the Stausphere page, it's nice to see Venice sitting below the the big-city heavy hitters. Enjoy, my gjeli-amours! Xo

IN-N-OUT

When SoCal was still not my "residence", I used to make it a point to eat at IN-N-OUT on all my trips to California. Now that I'm here, I sometimes forget about those double-double's and animal-style fries. Jon, on the other hand, always remembers 'cause he only has the chance to enjoy it 4 times a year - if that. At times, we forget to go! This time, we didn't :) Here's to everyones' favorite!

Cool Haus

Who knew that a converted postal van with chrome rims and a hot-pink top would become the hottest destination to cool you down? The best thing about this "destination" is that, it has the ability to be anywhere and everywhere. Yes, another truck. A dessert truck. I introduce to you: Cool Haus!

After lunch, I refreshed my Twitter feed and what do you know, Cool Haus is 3 blocks away from where Jon and I are driving. The day wasn't exactly saying, "I scream you scream, we all scream for ice-cream." The pitter patter of the rain was falling onto the windshield. "Babe, let's just share one," he says. -Silence- "Ok, you can have your own." Yahoo! So we pulled over, Jon stayed in the car, and I returned with 2 ice-cream sammies in a matter of minutes! He didn't think I was gonna forget about him, did he?

Cool Haus proudly serves all-natural ice-cream packed between 2 friendly-sized cookies. They have classic flavor combinations named after famous architects, but you are also free to mix-and-match your own sammy if you like. The ice-cream is of the seasonal variety, so not everything is available at once. Oh, I almost forgot about the edible wrapper... Made out of rice paper and soy based ink, the whole Cool Haus treat is fit to be eaten. My first dessert truck experience - I like!

His & Hers

Jon and I did a His & Hers night for dinner - we each cooked up our own dish and served it next to one another to form our meal. I went with something that I saw on the Food Network a few weeks back; Portobello Pizzas. The jumbo portobello mushroom acts as the "base" for the toppings: sweet italian sausage, grape tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. Jon chose complementing flavor profiles and did some whole-wheat pasta with vodka sauce, sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms. Our His & Hers was a success and I can see many more of these nights in the future - yahoo!
