Thanksgiving 2009: In the Kitchen

A sneak-peek of kitchen shots from Thanksgiving dinner... Chef Fern was in charge of pretty much the whole meal. I was appointed desserts and of course, I gladly accepted the "appointing" :) Fern finished so many dishes in a matter of hours, making cooking look so simple and easy. I on the other hand, left lots of time for prepping and baking my two desserts, hehe. Observing him chop away at veggies, mix ingredients like no one's business and gladly presenting the final plates was a trip - a "real restaurant chef" cooking in my family's kitchen! Lucky for me, he is a good friend as well... Double wammy.

Before looking at the pics, keep in mind this is not your traditional Thanksgiving dinner - no turkey, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, etc. I like to think of it as a dinner with close friends and amazing family celebrating happiness, love, life and health; of what I am so very thankful for.

La Cuisine Francaise

My Tita Michelle is quite the riot -in a good way- at the Salcedo Market every Saturday morning. Her voice can be heard near or far from her busy booth, "Good French food! Good French food!" On the Saturday's that I am in town for, I always purchase a little somethin' somethin' from her stall, La Cuisine. Not because I have known her since I was itty bitty, but because I really enjoy her homey French renditions; the vegetable lasagna is probably my favorite.

As Tita M started to take a serious liking to her new role as chef/caterer, she also noticed that she had quite the following at the Saturday market. Why not add "restauranteur" to the list? I guess there wasn't an answer to that question, hence La Cuisine the restaurant. Tita M and her husband Jean are now proud owners of their new baby.

I visited La Cuisine for the first time this week and was so pleased with how far they have come... My parents and I were lucky enough to have lunch with the "house-wife chef", as she likes to be called. I was so full from my lasagna and wasn't expecting to have dessert come. Next thing I know, 2 cake slices are brought to the table and it's like I forgot about my lunch. I have a new love for Concorde and Daquoise cakes. Let me recommend to you this French restaurant/deli :) Now for the best part, the pictures!

Suite Launch @ Encore

Talk about great timing this week... I was lucky enough to be at Encore's Suite launch - or should I say *sweet* launch.

Formerly Embassy Cuisine, Suite introduced to their special guests a new dessert menu. Can you say, "Dessert buffet!" When I saw the table spread, you could pretty much say my eyes popped like a kid in a candy store. Little bit-sized treats, a chocolate fountain and a cupcake tower. I love how cupcake towers are now a staple in any dessert spread :) For the not-so-sweet tooth, there was also picka-picka appetizers being passed around. Come to think of it, we were also drinking dessert-inspired cocktails. It was an all-around party; food, drinks and sweets! People expressed themselves with printed badges along the lines of, "Sugar Rush", "I'm you're sweet treat", "Bite into me", etc. Ok enough typing, let the food do the sweet talk!

Please excuse the pictures... One waiter asked me what restaurant I worked at - I assume he thought I was spying. Told him I was a food blogger and he didn't believe me! Still snapped away, but couldn't get the best shots to do the food justice. Sowee.
