No tourist should leave Singapore without having visited Newton Circus... This last visit, I must admit, I kind of felt like a tourist; so many things have changed since I last lived there. However, I was still around when Newton Circus went through it's "upgrade", so this night wasn't new for me.
Newton Circus is arguably one of the most popular hawker centers in Singapore. "Hawkers" are basically outdoor food courts - they say that this was the traditional way of eating in Singapore before the city became so fancy schmancy. It's nice to see that they still keep the hawker culture very much alive despite all the progress that Singapore has experienced. There is an astounding variety of local fare at fairly cheap prices, I say "fairly cheap" because I did notice the price hike compared to a few years ago. The whole atmosphere is part of the experience too - eating outside, interacting with the locals, the smells, the sights... It really is fun, I kinda miss it already!
