SusieCakes

I know I bake my own cupcakes, but there's no way I'm going to forget about all the lovely cupcakes that have inspired me...

Cupcake Me Mine

Take yourself back to your first cake decorating memory... Although it's a bit blurry now, I believe mine was with my mom way back when. Thinking I was helping her "decorate" one of her party cakes, I probably made it look, um, let's say avante-garde, with my experimental toddler hand-crafting skills. The cake was probably presented as an "interpretive [edible] decor". Fast forward a couple years, and the skills have gotten a bit more refined and presentable; we all have to start somewhere!

Just a few weeks ago, I took a casual cake decorating class at SusieCakes. It was so much fun! I got to learn the famous "Susie Swirl" in addition to decorating a dozen of my own SusieCakes cupcakes. None of my pieces boast dramatic techniques, they're just cute, simple designs that add another dimension and color flow to an already perfect treat. I felt like I was in Color Me Mine, except this one was the Cupcake Edition... And we all know a Cupcake Edition of anything is ten times better ;-)

Delicious Duo

Cupcakes aren't the only thing Miss Susie [SusieCakes] can bake... Right now I'm obsessed with their chocolate chip cookie and chocolate brownie. Gimme gimme more :)

Lilac Flowers & Purple Icing

I love getting birthday hugs and birthday kisses. In all honestly, I only really got -semi- birthday kisses from mom and dad, no real ones. Cheeks are 'semi', and on the lips are 'real' :) My brother did give me a birthday hug... No other hugs nor kisses. Anyways, next on the list is birthday calls/texts and I guess now I have to say FaceBook posts and Twitter @'s. Thank you to everyone who greeted me today in some form or another. Friends and family truly matter the most to me.

I'm so lucky that my parents are here on my special day. It was a quiet birthday today. Waiting until next week to celebrate with the girls... Birthday presents aside, the best simple pleasures of the day were my red velvet cake and lilac roses. Xo

Sweet Fix

If I'm ever in the Brentwood area, it's a total giveaway that I'm visiting SusieCakes for either a red velvet cake, red velvet slice or red velvet cupcake... You get my drift. Trust me, you will dream about it afterwards! Well yesterday, I went ahead and got a red velvet cupcake and something new... *drum roll please* S'mores Cupcakes! It's their seasonal special at the moment so I gave it a try. It was a chocolate cake filled with a squirt of chocolate buttercream frosting + toasted 'mallow frosting topped with graham crumbs. The only thing missing was a Hershey's chocolate square! I think I'll make it a point to try their seasonal specials in addition to my loyal love for red-velvet :P

Surprise!!

While eating at Gjelina, I was consciously saving room for a sweet-ending and was very taken back when no one at the table wanted to order anything for dessert. On the car ride home, my mind was already thinking of possible places to stop at for a quick something sweet. Little did I know that Chris and Shannon had been on a "secret mission" during the day to order me my favorite Red Velvet cake from SusieCakes. The 6 of us indulged in slicing ourselves a little piece of heaven... They know me well ;)

Cupcake Couture

Brooke wants to see your lovely face,
So come dressed in silk, chiffon or lace
The theme of the day is Cupcake Couture,
With food, games and cupcakes galore
Show the newlyweds that you care...
Please bring baking accessories and cooking ware

This weekend, I helped host a bridal shower for my favorite bride-to-be: B-Unit. Brooke and I have had an obsession with cupcakes ever since I can remember, so a cupcake-themed shower could not have been more appropriate. Together, we have definitely used up lots of gas money for countless drives to SusieCakes and Sprinkles. Last summer, we even went on our very own Cupcake Tour 08 to see if we could find new untapped destinations. We came to find out that SusieCakes and Sprinkles are still our winners. In fact, Brooke is looking to get a perfected red velvet recipe from the Ritz Carlton for her wedding cake. Too bad they charge an absurd amount to bring in your own cake from another company.

For Brooke's shower, we had 3 cupcake towers filled with red velvet and peanut butter cupcakes from SusieCakes. What is a celebration without cupcakes :)

SusieCakes

If you are looking for the absolute BEST red velvet cake or cupcake in the Los Angeles area, look no further. Drive to 11708 San Vicente Blvd @ Barrington and you will arrive at the red velvet mecca: SusieCakes. This is the all-American home-style neighborhood bakery that never fails to greet customers with, "Hi, welcome to SusieCakes" when they stroll in. You have to try everything here, even if it takes multiple visits to do so. Their frosting-filled cupcakes are delicious, their speciality layer cakes are out of this world and the cookies, brownies, cheesecakes, whoopie pies and bars are worth the calories.

Their red velvet cake seems to have been a staple in quite a few important birthdays over the past two years. It is unbelievably satisfying - the moist red velvety layers are separated by slathers of rich cream-cheese frosting. The whole cakes come in 2 sizes: 9 inch and 12 inch. They are also sold by the slice in the bakeshop and if you're lucky, sometimes bite-size testers are out! They also have red velvet cupcakes if you're going for a smaller version of the same taste. If you're planning to order a cake for an occasion, it's best to call a few days before so the bakery can have it ready in advance with a personalized message on the cake face. Get ready for your slice of greatness!

Besides Brentwood, SusieCakes is also located in Newport & Calabasas.
